Dustin struggled to breathe through the mist of spray-tan. David was already unconscious. Kenneth was prostrate and prone. And now, the lights in Dustin’s eyes began to fade. He wondered, possibly a final thought: How had they gotten the drop on them?
After enjoying a brunch of donuts, the trio had returned to the Dr. Pants Medical Funk Facility, eager to begin the search for a new bassist. But something was amiss. As the doors swung open, they didn’t hear the usual soundtrack that P.A.N-T.S. would choose, but the deep thump of house music. The air was thick with...something.
“P.A.N-T.S.?” David shouted, expecting the computer’s reply.
Kenneth and Dustin looked at one another. They’d never had a problem with the Personal Android Nano-Tech System before--except for that time it went evil and kept re-mixing their albums as nu-metal. But after the last logic upgrade, it was working perfectly.
“This has to be a joke, right?” asked Dustin. “I thought we agreed not to install a personality, because that’s always what happens in the movies right before a sentient computer tries to kill everybody.”
In the shadows, they heard a giggle and the shuffle of tiny feet. They swung around, but found their bodies would barely respond.
“I’m moving so slow,” Kenneth said. “It’s like walking in molasses.”
Now the tittering came from behind them. And from the left and right. Dressed in skin-tight glittering faux-leather, the tiny orange forms of the Guido-loompas emerged and surrounded them. Their eyes, as always, were covered in sunglasses.
“Yo. Yo. Yo.”
They spoke the same syllable over and over again, as always. The Guido-loompas never said anything else, but there was menace behind the word. How long had they been trying to kill the band?
And now they had drugged them with some sort of aerosol party cocktail, no doubt to make it easier to bronzer them to death.
But just as Dustin had held on the longest, he was also the first to draw in the first sweet breaths of air after his orange shell had been cracked. He blinked and began to make out shadows in the sunlight of a figure waking his friends.
The haze cleared and he looked around. They were outside the Funk Facility, a trail of unconscious Guido-loompas leading out the front door, ending a few feet away. “What...what...” David struggled to say.
“I came for the audition and found you guys being spray-tanned by these goofy midgets,” said the man. “I fought them off with my bass and dragged you outside before the fumes got to me. I’m Devin, by the way.”

The Dr. Pants Chronicles 2: Log-sack
The hulking 9-foot frame of Log-sack loomed in the doorway, towering over the band. So large, he seemed to swallow up their entire field of vision, but in a crack between his massive arms and inhuman torso, they could see the bound and gagged figure of Kenneth behind him.
This was not the Log-sack they had known. Half Kenny Loggins, half John Cusack, the composite man had been a friend to them in the past. His back bore the brunt of the collapsing roof when an earthquake hit Dr. Pants Medical Funk Facility. He helped fight against the abomination Cussina (half Joan Cusack, half Jimmy Messina) when it sought to disrupt a studio recording.
But now, the easy half-smiles of the star of “Better Off Dead” and the singer of “Danger Zone” were aligned in a frown.
“What are you doing with Kenneth?” asked David. “Have you hurt him, Log-sack?”
His tree-limb arm came crashing down, knocking the band off their feet. He lumbered forward and as the lamp swung across the ceiling, it illuminated the swirling logo of their nemesis, the diabolical Professor Tornado, seared into his chest.
“Tornado’s gotten to him,” Dustin shouted. “Argh! If only he was more Cusack than Loggins. Then maybe he wouldn’t be so conflicted!”
The beast, confused by the notion that Loggins might somehow be less conflicted than Cusack, didn’t notice Aaron reaching into his pocket and pulling out his box cutter. It would be useless against the nigh-invincible might of Log-sack, but maybe...just maybe...if he could throw it to Kenneth, he could slice through his bonds and begin work on the beast’s one weakness: a funky beat...
The box cutter barely made it over Log-sack’s shoulder, in the narrow space between his mountainous body and the ceiling, landing inches away from Kenneth. His eyes, red like the Danger Zone, swung to Aaron and with a voice much like that of a movie star, Log-sack bellowed. He turned away from David and Dustin, allowing them to aid their captive friend, but in the blink of an eye, he lunged.
Aaron, screaming, was caught in the unbreakable grip of Log-sack’s arms. But it lasted only a moment. The screaming stopped and the creature let his prey fall lifeless to the floor.
Behind the beast’s back, the rest of the band exchanged mournful looks. They really needed to find a new bass player.

The Dr. Pants Chronicles 1: The Aftermath of the Doppelganger War
Dustin shuddered as he peeled bits of raw chicken off the arm of his jacket. It’s not as if any of the other band members loved being pelted with raw meat, but none of the others were vegetarians.
“It’s like they do it just to spite me,” he said to David, who still had feathers in his hair.
“They’re our evil doppelgangers,” David replied. “They don’t specifically hate you. They hate all of us. Makes me wish they’d never accidentally mutated from our blood samples that one time.”
“THIS makes you wish they’d never been mutated from our blood samples? THIS? Not the 800 other times we’ve had to fight them?” Dustin asked incredulously. “I don’t care if they loved us and bought us candy, I still wish they didn’t exist. They give me the creeps.”
Kenneth coughed sheepishly. It had been his trials of the Pants 4000 DNA testing kit/amp that accidentally created their wayward twins. “At least we got a song out of it, guys,” he said. “A pretty kick-ass song.”
The band couldn’t argue with that. Risking their lives wasn’t always fun. Saving Oklahoma City from robot spiders and amorous pigs wasn’t easy. But at least they got some cool music out of the deal.
Aaron looked at his bandmates, perplexed. “Wait, did you guys get hit by all those exploding chickens? Didn’t the velvet blankets shield you?”
Dustin removed a beak from his pocket and then pointed to his wedding ring. David and Kenneth did the same.
“We’re all married, dude, remember?” asked Dustin. “So, while you were hiding in bed with the Doppel-groupies, we were remaining faithful to our ladies and dodging raw chicken thighs. Where’d they go, anyway?”
The Doppel-groupies, like the Doppelgangers, had fled the scene once the poultry started popping. And with them went the secret location of Dr. Pants, their mentor and legal guardian, if the boasts in their ransom letter were true.
David wandered about with his cellphone up in the air, searching for a signal.
“Anyone know where those crazy bastards have left us this time?”
“Mmmm, probably southside,” said Kenneth, consulting his GPS. “Yep. South Penn. Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”
The men nodded silently. They would look for an exit. They would call for a ride. And then they would get some donuts.

On Music & Italy
Sometimes it becomes clear to me that there are forces in the world that are out to break me and make all that I find joyful turn to misery.
Not the most positive way to start a blog entry about my recent, absolutely amazing trip to Italy with my wife and her parents. I am aware of this. Still, when you can get outside your normal life and routine and look at things from the outside a bit, certain things become crystal clear.
Many times we take vacations to renew ourselves…or allow ourselves to be renewed. Even if we don’t know that’s why we do it, it’s still probably why we do it. I have been in desperate, desperate need of renewal. The many journeys K.C. and I take on the road playing music do not renew me. I suppose they could, if I allowed them to sometimes. I have been in quite a dark place recently, I think. Darker than I really had realized or imagined. It is only in the light of this amazing vacation and what I’ve allowed it to show me and do to me have I become aware of this. Some of you might be saying, “Well, of course you feel better. You’re in ITALY.” It’s not always that easy, though. There have been moments on this amazing journey where I’ve been a bit too jammed up with worrying about things at home, etc. to really enjoy the moment. As I type this, I have arrived at a place where that’s not the case, at least for now.
We give ourselves over in slavery to so many things. There are many days where I am not too far from believing the adage from “Fight Club”: “Do you own your possessions, or do your possessions own you?” I don’t know that it is only my possessions that have owned me lately. I have been owned by my own fear, my own ambition (which can be a dangerous thing…how much of our own ambition is grown out of fear that we will NOT amount to a point that is satisfactory to us? Can we not trust that God/The Universe/whatever has a plan that will be perfect in the long run?).
I have also been impaired in my enjoyment of music lately. My ability to really enjoy listening has been quite affected. I need to utilize it as the symptom it is more often…I should know by now that if the music is largely not pleasurable/interesting and more frustrating/befuddling, it’s a sign that all is not well in my mind and heart.
I am so proud of this record that we’ve made, the new Dr. Pants EP (the 1st of 4), but the truth is I can’t control what anybody thinks of it or what the world does with it. It’s not my job to, either. I desperately want to believe that great music will make room for itself…but it doesn’t always work this way. The truth is that Dr. Pants is probably destined to be a cult band, and the cult is still finding us. I’m so grateful for the people who have discovered the music over the last few years and have really connected with it. I pray that I am more grateful for that every day than I was the previous day.
I also have felt so desperate financially…it’s interesting that, even though this entire trip was paid for by my in-laws (an amazing, amazing thing), it’s been good to give up control of the money. I’m not in control of the money. I can’t even try to pay for anything, because I don’t have a single Euro of my own in my pocket. That’s a little different. It’s like, “Just stand back and be blessed, because there’s nothing you can do about it.” Pretty humbling on some level.
I’m so glad for the moments I’ve had on the plane ride over, and the trains throughout Italy, to listen to entire records on my iPod, and to just sit and enjoy. It’s pretty much all been entire records that I’m not very familiar with…I’ve even listened to a few things for the first time ever, start-to-finish. Of course, as I’ve been in Italy, my mind has been its own jukebox as well. Certain tracks come irresistibly to mind (how can one walk around the city of Firenze, as the Italians call it, and not think of “You Enjoy Myself” by Phish?), and others from the plane ride over stick in my head and, for whatever reason, become cornerstone songs to my own personal soundtrack for the trip (both “Broken” and “Rhinestone Eyes” by Gorillaz). Something about being in a foreign country, outside one’s own home, opens the ears. I don’t know what it is. I think I have just been approaching a sort of potential burnout with work in general…including the radio show. Now, though, I don’t feel that way at all…I am so pleased to listen to some of the new(er) things in my iTunes that I hadn’t even been able to approach before…to listen and think, “Yeah, I’d really like to play that.” Italy is interesting, too…there isn’t as much attitude surrounding music here as there is in the US right now, or Oklahoma, even. I love Oklahoma, and I love the music scene there, but there are tastemakers at work in Oklahoma, just like there are everywhere else, and sometimes I wonder if there’s really room for all of us in the new world of the growing Oklahoma music scene.
I desperately don’t want to be bitter or resentful about that, though, and that is truly helped by the experience of this trip. I don’t want the root of bitterness to take hold in my heart in regards to anything, whether it be in regards to my work or anything else. I want gratitude, peace, joy, grace. I want all these things in abundance. And I very much want them even more after this experience.
I have to be guarded…because I believe that these things can be stolen away, if I allow them to be. Stolen by bitterness, fear…these things that I can fall prey to so easily. Here in the holy city of Rome I sit, and these things are clearer than ever. I can only hope they remain clear once I come home.
The glow of amazing experiences of people, places and things wears off so quickly, too quickly. I hope that these lessons I have learned in Italy, about gratitude, grace, fear, bitterness and music…I hope that these lessons do not fade once the glow of Italia grows faint. There is so much in those lessons that is about my life every day, everywhere, and not just about these amazing few days spent in Italy. Let me always remember.

The Music & The Consciousness
Consciousness is a weird thing. It’s such a strange idea that each one of us is just this small, humanoid creature, with a consciousness that SEEMS enormous, but only because it’s all we know in the whole world. If we had any way to compare or experience a comparison between our individual consciousnesses and, say, all of them put together, or the consciousness of what many of us would call “God,” we would, I’m sure, regard the playgrounds of our individual minds as small. As it stands, though, these playgrounds are the only place each of us will ever exist, and all we take in, all we experience and all we think/feel in reaction thereto will be the entire makeup of that playground.
This is the kind of thing that I think about, or more than likely, quasi-freak out about, when I wake up in the morning these days. I have these moments in the night and in the morning, when I wake up from sleep, where I realize how small I am (this has been happening to me since I was a teenager, but the experience has evolved a bit…it used to just result in abject fear…now, for some reason, it just makes me kind of sad). I realize that all these crazy thoughts I have, all these weird ideas, or opinions, or feelings are mine only, and no one will ever know they’re there unless I express them somehow.
I said not too long ago on Twitter that art was “the only sensible reaction to the human condition.” When I say “human condition,” I mean exactly what I have just been describing here. This is where music comes in for me…it is by far the art form I relate to the most, and so it has always been my first choice in terms of some way I might communicate to the world.
So, I can’t help but do it. If I want to somehow communicate some of these things, I must make music. Maybe the music I make won’t impact you in the way this blog entry has…maybe you’ll listen to the upcoming Dr. Pants EPs and think, “this doesn’t really sound like it’s about human consciousness at all.” That’s fine. I hope to get around to tackling some of these ideas more directly as time goes on. But I do hope you’ll listen. I’ll keep making music even if you don’t, though. I’m pretty sure my sanity depends on it.

25 Records That Mean Something To Me, #2
It's hard to talk about Frank Zappa and just mention one specific album. In fact, when I initially conceived of this series of blog entries (of which I've managed to complete a whopping ONE so far), I'm sure I had a different Zappa album in mind than the one I'm about to talk about. But I pulled this disc out earlier today when I was picking out music for K.C. and I to clean the house to, and realized that somewhere, at some point, I obtained a new copy of it and replaced the original CD copy I had gotten 15 years ago. I was pleased to discover this; it meant that I didn't have to worry about the disc wearing out any time soon. My other copy had been worn slick, as I recall. It was scratched up pretty bad, especially for a CD in MY collection (I tend to be pretty protective of my discs...I had taken this record on so many road trips, placed it and removed it from so many CD wallets, that it finally started to look pretty rough). Anyway, all of this to say that I realized THE GRAND WAZOO is a record that means something to me, for sure. THE GRAND WAZOO is the second of two albums Zappa released in the early seventies that highlighted his particular take on what might be called a jazz-rock fusion (the first being WAKA/JAWAKA)...an extension of the HOT RATS concept, but in a larger ensemble context. These are almost Zappa's "big band" albums; when given the opportunity to record with a rhythm section including guitars, keys, bass & drums augmented by a full brass and woodwind section, these two albums were what came out. There is a jazz structure (or some version thereof) to many of the tunes here. Some sort of theme, head, or main melody (or several) occur, then a series of solos by different members of the ensemble, and then a return to the theme(s) at the end of the piece. That is probably an oversimplification, but it gives at least a little bit of context for those who might not have heard this record. It's an album that is complex without being difficult, serious without being dreary, goofy without being childish, and beautiful (gorgeous, even) without being saccharine, even for a moment. The finest example of all these attributes, I think, is the final track, "Blessed Relief" (I personally hear the first word there as "bles-sed", two syllables, not one). It's a elegant, slow piece, with a sort of lilting melody at the beginning that gives way to a gorgeous, open section with great electric piano arpeggios. Then come the solos, which are fantastic. In my first post in this series I talked a great deal about atmosphere...this particular track has atmosphere to spare. It's a fairly unique track in Zappa's oeuvre; there's really not another quite like it. As unique as it is, the song and the album still very much bear Zappa's image, sound, and vibe...but perhaps in such a way that a certain grace is present that isn't always found in some of his other work. Highly recommended, highly regarded.

Can't Sleep.
I (David) can't sleep. I can't sleep because I'm dreaming too much. Not dreaming while asleep, mind you, but dreaming while I lay there, trying to get to sleep. Every thought is about something I'm doing, creating, working on, or something that I WANT to be doing, creating or working on. I lay with my head on the pillow, and my head is about to explode with thoughts about Dr. Pants, the music we're working on right now, the anxiety I have about whether we'll actually be able to get this gargantuan project done this year(4 EPs, and all the accompanying artwork, design, new website, mixing, mastering). I think about how I want us to do a short tour this year, at some point, somehow, some way (even if it's just two shows in Texas). I think about how all of it seems possible and yet not possible all at the same time. The songs, the music, whether new or old (I mean, it could be a song from the EP we're doing now, or one of the 3 that we plan on doing, or it could be a song from Gardening In a Tornado or Cusack-Loggins, or even Feezle Day or earlier) run through my head. I work on solos and try and make them better, hear notes and phrases that I want to play next time we perform the song, or when we record it.
I think about the Mixtape Jones Radio Show and how I long to grow its audience. I want to create a community of people nationwide who are listening to the show, commenting on the Facebook page, all talking about our favorite songs of the moment, of the year, of all time...
I long for a moment when things fall together and obstacles are removed, overcome, no longer a concern...my head spins as these thoughts and ideas and desires overtake me and eliminate any possibility of true rest until some of it, any of it, comes to fruition. It's as if my restless spirit has decided that it must be cured, or subdued by progress, by measurable steps taken if sleep is to return to my life.
This has been going on for days. Somehow I got to sleep last night between 2:30 and 3:00 am...I am hoping maybe, somehow, now that I've poured some of this out through the keyboard, that tonight I can make my head stop earlier.
I am grateful that the things that keep me up at night are about passion. They are about a true dedication to work that I love. Are there stresses in my life? Money worries, etc? Absolutely. But sleep has and does serve as an escape from those things. I said I have anxiety about whether I'll get this project done, and that's true, but I also have such hope that it feels a lot less like stress and more like anticipation.
Okay. Going back to give sleep another shot. I hope it only keeps my brain at bay temporarily, and that I have the same struggle all over again tomorrow night.

Studio, Day #2
So, I'm a little late writing this, but last Thursday was day 2 of recording our new project. Dustin and I spent the day continuing to get drum tracks recorded, and managed to get 9 more songs done (so we have drum tracks done for 19 out of 23 songs...a couple of the remaining songs are probably not "drums first" songs, so we're really close to being able to move forward past the drum stage). I tried, quasi-successfully, to record a little video with my laptop during the session, but the video and audio kept getting out of sync, as you can see in the videos below:
Thursday left me even more excited than I was on Tuesday, I'm pretty sure. I really hope some of you will consider pitching in your money to buy the music in advance, so that we can get this project all the way to completion. Become a Little Weasel! Click Here To Become a Little Weasel!!

Studio, Day #1
So, today was day 1 of the actual recording process for the new Dr. Pants project (to learn more about what we are doing with the rather large amount of music we're recording go HERE and HERE). Today was the first of two days of drum tracking, with just me and Dustin pounding it out in his little home studio. In August, Dustin and I spent two days doing what we call pre-production with our friend Kendall, talking about what we might be doing with the 23 songs we're recording, so a number of decisions about form and so forth have already been made.
Today was an interesting and perhaps auspicious day all around. Today was the 103rd anniversary of Oklahoma's statehood (I become more and more proud of our little band's home state and home city every day, in spite of its flaws). It was also the day the Beatles' catalog finally hit iTunes. This has very little direct effect on me, seeing as how I purchased all the reissued CDs in stereo AND mono a year ago, but it is more than fair to say that I would not be doing any of the things I'm doing now if it weren't for the absolutely massive inspiration the Beatles have been to me throughout my life, starting at three years old. Finally, I found out some unfortunate news about a close friend today which threw pretty much everything into perspective in a way that I've not experienced in a while.
Dustin is fantastic. I say this a lot, to a lot of people, but it always bears repeating. He is one of the kindest, gentlest, smartest and most talented people I know, and I get to perform and record with him. Ridiculous. How did I get this lucky? He knocked out great drum tracks for 10 of our 23 songs today like a champ. It's always a pleasure to listen to him play, especially when I know he's having a good time.
I couldn't help but be thrilled today, playing through these songs with Dustin, and just knowing this is the best group of songs I've ever written. There's fantastic stuff here, and stuff that really comes from somewhere beyond me, I'm pretty sure. I don't think it's coincidence that not only is some of this music the most entertaining music I've ever written, or the funniest, or whatever, but some of it is the most deep, and the most impactful stuff I've written also. And I couldn't be happier about that. I had a distinct sense today that this music will get finished, that the money we need will come through, and that this music will reach the audience it is destined for.
We'll be in the studio again Thursday, finishing drums for the rest of the songs. Should be a blast. I'll try to have some video for you. Peace.

Greetings, friends.
It's been a year and a half since "The Cusack-Loggins EP", and three and a half years since "Gardening In a Tornado", so needless to say, we're getting pretty darned psyched about getting a new, real studio album out for you. In fact, Dustin and I have booked a couple of days of studio time in June with our good friend Kendall Combes (mix engineer on "Gardening") to start going over songs, deciding which ones we like, which ones need work, etc. I could not be more excited about starting this process; making records is probably my favorite part of being in a band, and I can't wait to do it again. It's our hope to have a new album of songs to you by year's end.

FIRST WEBCAST A SUCCESS!!
Man, what a great night. We were a little behind schedule (my sincere apologies to everyone who tuned in and sat waiting for 20 minutes), but it turned out all right. There were a couple of details that I didn't get to flesh out, but you live and learn. Playing shows at CD Warehouse is an undertaking, because we have to bring all our own P.A. gear, etc. Hopefully we'll do a show at VZDs in the fall some time, and we can webcast that, too. I can't really describe what it was like to know that so many of you were out there listening. It was really freakin' cool. I think that it really helps alleviate the ache in my heart that originates from not being able to come play for all you fans that live far away. It was a fantastic feeling. The other guys in the band had a great time, too...I think poor Aaron is having a hard time keeping up, though. At the end of the gig he said, "I think we'll need to edit a few songs out before it broadcasts", and I said, "Dude it was LIVE." He had this "Oh s%#t" look on his face. Thanks, of course, to Jason for running sound and all his technical help, Jerry and CD Warehouse for putting us up (and putting up with us), and K.C. for adding her bass playing to two songs!
If you saw it and you liked it, please go to CD Baby or iTunes and order a CD or download some mp3s. Your support will be the thing that eventually makes it possible for us to come out and see you in person. For those who are curious, here's last night's setlist: DOPPELGANGER ROCK

CITY JAMS
Hey everyone!
It's been a little quiet in Pants-world as of late, but we're fixin' to change all that. As you may (or may not) know, I (David) am currently out on tour with K.C. (Clifford, my bride and partner in this craziness known as the music world), performing her music in venues across the midwest and east coast. I decided to attempt an exercise, a plan, a project if you will, to flex my creative muscles and to get some new Pants music out there to all our fans and friends. Thus was born "CITY JAMS", a group of songs, each of which is about a different city we are visiting on this tour. The best part? We're GIVING THEM AWAY FOR FREE. Each one will just be a little Garageband recording I make on this here laptop I'm typing on right now, but they are already shaping up to be some fun ditties.
What do you need to do to get them??
All you have to do is JOIN the Dr. Pants email list (up in the top right hand corner of this page) before September 1st and I'll send an mp3 of each one to you as soon as it's finished. First up is Minneapolis/St. Paul. You'll get the lyrics in the email as well.
It's that simple. Time to rock to some CITY JAMS.
More soon,
David, Dustin, Aaron & Kenneth

The Legend of Kenny Loggins "Craphat"
Okay, first of all, let me be clear that it is CRAP HAT, just as one word. In case you haven't listened to the song yet.
I (David) am from Oklahoma City, but back in high school and college (especially in college) I had a number of friends who lived in Tulsa. I used to go to Tulsa for a day or two on breaks from school--Christmas, Spring Break, etc.
My Tulsa friends were inspiring, to say the least. Most certainly a creative, hipster brand of people. One of them, Brian Byrne, played guitar in the first incarnation of Dr. Pants. Some of the stuff they came up with is classic and survives to this day (at least, in my mind it certainly does). Kenny Loggins "Craphat" is a perfect example.
The story goes like this: one night said group of friends were sitting at Village Inn (the 24 hour restaurant of choice). This was not an unusual occurrence. Whatever discussion they were in most likely reached a lull, and a man named Tom, out of nowhere pipes up with: "Hey, did you guys know that Kenny Loggins put out an album in the seventies called "Kenny Loggins-Craphat"? And that on the front cover he was literally wearing a hat that looked like it was made out of shit?" Outlandish as this tale was, it certainly pales in comparison to the fact that the rest of my friends present at the time BELIEVED HIM. I mean, had I been there I probably would have WANTED to believe him...Kind of an unlikely story, but not altogether implausible. I mean, some of the album covers from the seventies are pretty ridiculous, aren't they? Is the "Craphat" concept really that much more obnoxious than, say, "Sloppy Seconds" by Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show (go look that one up)?
So, fast forward to 24 hours later when said group of folks is back at (you guessed it) Village Inn once again. Tom breaks it to them that he made it up. This, of course, makes it all the more awesome and brilliant.
This is how I remember it...and I heard it second hand to begin with, so people who were there for real may want to add addenda to my story. Go for it. But this urban legend simply must be retold, and simply had to be immortalized in song. Hence the third verse of "Kenny Loggins", from our new release, THE CUSACK-LOGGINS EP. Enjoy.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS (IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY)
Greetings! It really is upon us--at long last THE CUSACK-LOGGINS EP
IS HERE!! As previously announced, we will be celebrating the release
of this fabulous piece of goodness by playing a really fantastic show
for you on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST!! We are holding this fantabulous
shindig at CD Warehouse at 4001 N. Penn. There will be some cheap
refreshments, and it will be a rocking good time. The new CDs will be
$8 each, and it will be $5 to get into the show. We've decided that
if you think you're going to want to sit and listen, instead of stand
up and rock out, you can bring your own chair (those snazzy camp
chairs that people bring to outdoor gigs and so forth should work
great). Full info is below!
Meanwhile, starting next week (Sunday, October 25th), you'll be able
to listen to the whole EP on doctorpants.com!! At this time, two
tracks are streaming on our MySpace page (www.myspace.com/drpants5),
on our new Facebook music page (they don't really give you a succinct
URL for those...Just go on Facebook and do a search for "Dr. Pants"
and you should find us) and on our Sonicjive.com page
(www.sonicjive.com/drpants). We hope that if you are not already our
MySpace friend or Facebook fan that you will become both! Also, go to
Sonicjive.com, which is our new favorite music networking site, create
your profile and become a Sonicjive fan of Dr. Pants!!
We really hope you'll make the show, and that you'll bring friends.
Forward this on to as many people as possible and let's pack this one
out! See you there!
David, Aaron, Dustin & Kenneth
P.S. For you out of town folks, the EP should be available through
CD Baby by the 11/1 release date, as well as on iTunes and other
digital music services shortly after that. I'll send out another
email when these things are up and running.

Still listening.
So I just listened to Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth from start to finish. The nature of the experience I had listening to it just now is the kind of thing that makes me realize that the way music is engaged in our culture, to a large degree, is completely wrong, or at least wrong-headed.
It's taken me a long time to arrive at the place in my life where I "get" this record. I'm there now, and I can't really explain to you why I "get" it now and I didn't before. The thing that changed for me is so abstract I can't even put it into words. This is what makes me start to doubt things, to doubt that our culture has anything right about how to engage something as abstract as music...At the very least, the entire school of rock criticism starts to seem completely ludicrous. Those guys sit there and make totally subjective judgments about a piece of music, try to explain to you in some quasi-objective manner why they do or don't like it, when all they are really doing is making a sad attempt to justify to the rest of the world the fact that they did or did not connect with a certain piece of music. What a complete waste of time. Now, mind you, as soon as I say this, I realize that many of the so-called rock critic types have many times influenced my decision about whether to buy a certain record or not, but really, for the most part, all that's happening is me observing a certain consensus among writers who have some taste in common with me, which gives me the confidence that I might connect with that record they all like, and so I go for it.
This much I can say...If you have always had trouble with Daydream Nation, the way I did for so long, keep at it. You may eventually come to the place I have come to.

It's always darkest before the dawn.
Man alive...You'd think that we haven't been doing anything around here. I have finally added a number of new things to the site, that I hope you all will enjoy. First of all, our new friend Lauren Hunt took some bitchin' pictures after one of the sessions for the new EP, and I posted a number of those on the photo page. Also (DUN DUN DUN), TWO ROUGH MIXES FROM THE NEW EP on the "Listen" page, PLUS, at LONG LAST, our appearance on Buzz Born & Bred from MARCH (sheesh...how do these things end up taking this long??). PLEASE go check these things out!! Come to see us in Stillwater next month if you have the means, and then join us the following weekend for our first Full Circle gig in...a while. Drop us a line, join the mailing list...

Free mp3s on the "listen' page.
For the most part, right now, I am blogging/journaling about relevant Dr. Pants info (as well as other thoughts) at our myspace. So go to www.myspace.com/drpants5 to read some of that. If it's crazy important, I'll copy it here, too, but keep an eye on that spot.

EP Recording, Day Three
Ugh...It's frustrating to get to this point in the day and realize that it's challenging to access all the amazing thoughts and feelings I had earlier. It was a great day...A lot of fun, a lot of good things. We have tracked everything for the EP, save 2 guitar parts we're going to get Kenneth to do a week from Saturday. By the time we get there, most of the mixing will be done, too, so we'll just plug his parts in and that will be it.
I may have said this yesterday, but this record is SO much fun...I can't describe the joy I've gotten from making it. I can't tell you about too much of it without giving away some of the things that will crack you up when you first hear it, but just know that we have managed to capture some of the craziness that makes Dr. Pants so much fun to see live. I laughed so many times today listening back to what we've done, because of the actual humorous nature of it, but also just out of sheer joy. "Bootyfest" sounds amazing, "If I Were John Cusack" sounds amazing..."Kenny Loggins" sounds amazing, and will sound even better once Kenneth gets his part on there. "It All Depends" and "Sweet Natasha" have more of a "serious" feel to them than the other songs, but it would be dishonest to make a completely goofy record. I've said already that I think our next full studio record will be a tad more "serious", so this EP will be your chance to get crazy with the Pants.
Aaron came back today and did his vocal part on "Kenny Loggins", and he also contributed a "bonus" guitar element, that will be revealed to you when the record is done (heh heh). I am proud of that kid. His heart is in this record, which is more than I could have asked for.
Dustin...What to say about Dustin? Dustin worked hard, did and said great things, got great sounds, was easy and fun to work with, I mean...and that's not even to mention his drumming. When it's all said and done, he will have been greatly responsible for this record's existence. I am really thrilled to have had this opportunity to work with him, and I'm excited about him being involved in other Dr. Pants projects in the future. It's hard to say where this band is going, and who's going to be able stay involved and who's not, but I will do everything I can do to keep Dustin involved, in one way or another.
I will write another blog after we do Kenneth's last two parts, so that he gets his due. Right now, there probably wouldn't be a Dr. Pants if it weren't for Kenneth...he cannot be undervalued.
So, until then, I hope you drool with anticipation for this record. I hope these blogs have done nothing but whet your appetite for it. We will see you all soon.

EP Recording, Day Two
I love recording downtown. I love leaving the recording space (611 Creative, art gallery and workspace), and driving home through our humble but enjoyable downtown area here in OKC. No, we are not a bustling metropolis, but things are coming along, little by little. KC and I are thinking about possibly moving again some time soon, potentially further away from downtown, and that makes me sad.
What a day. Aaron, Dustin and I all met at the studio this morning around 9:30 or 10, and got to work. We focused on getting Aaron's bass parts done, and man, did he rise to the occasion. Aaron is not a bass player by trade, folks, in case you did not know. He's a phenomenal guitar player who has humbled himself to play an instrument he's not as well versed in to fill our need. That being said, today Aaron WAS a bass player. And, boy, am I thankful for that. His parts all came together fairly quickly; we were able to get a great deal of usable material from him in a relatively short time. A good musician is a good musician, sometimes on an instrument that is not his/her primary one. I did a number of guitar parts simultaneously with him, which worked really well for both of us.
Dustin and I spent the rest of the afternoon solidifying some of my guitar parts, and doing my vocals, which, for this record, are a LOT less demanding than they were on GARDENING. One song is totally instrumental, and two other songs don't have very many lyrics at all. Also, I am better at writing for my vocal range these days, and that shows on this record.
Dustin & I are having a blast making this record, and we so hope that you will have a blast listening to it when it's done. Dr. Pants is moving boldly forward, making the kind of music that it has been called to make, I believe. We hope you agree.
More tomorrow. One day to go (except for maybe a couple of overdubs done later by Kenneth).

EP Recording, Day One
So, with a few normal technical delays (and you should expect these things), recording commenced today on THE CUSACK-LOGGINS EP. All members of the Pants were in attendance at one point or another, starting with just Dustin and me, then Kenneth, then Aaron.
I arrived to meet Dustin in the office/gallery space where we are recording, and his lovely wife Becca was assisting. After a brief conversation about tennis, Dustin and I set about the business of getting that party started. We were just about settled in, and then Kenneth arrived, and we got him going, too. We were just recording drums for real, with everything else being a scratch track. We started with "Kenny Loggins", and then moved on to "It All Depends" and "If I Were John Cusack". We got good drum takes on all of them within a few tries. We decided to take a breather, and right around then KC came by to say hi (our church meets right down the block, so she was nearby, having just finished at the service...it meets in the afternoon). We all decided that it would be a great time to get something to eat, but KC declined to join us. We called Aaron, who was on his way, and told him to meet us at the pub.
After a meal filled with good food and interesting conversation (you really haven't lived until you've sat down for an hour with Kenny & Aaron on full tilt), we headed back to the space to rock out the last two songs. "Bootyfest" and "Sweet Natasha" proved less complicated to get a good take on than I had thought. "Sweet Natasha", once we got the form correct, got nailed down really quickly. By that point, it was 9:30 or so, and time to call it a night. Dustin, Aaron and I are meeting back there in the morning at about 9 or so, so it's time to rest up. Kenneth will hopefully join us come evening.
I sooo appreciate Dustin and his engineering capabilities, even though he said today that he doesn't ever want to be an engineer by trade. The drums sound great, and I can't wait to pile everything else on there.
More tomorrow. Sleep well, everyone.
Sun, Jun 22nd, 2008 12:00 AM CDT
Okay. Several Things.
Hope everyone is well. It's a great time to do what I do, since I was privileged enough to not only play a fantastic Dr. Pants show this week, but also to play an amazing KC Clifford show as well. If you weren't there, you REALLY missed out (her new CD, POCKETS FULL OF HOPE - LIVE AT THE BLUE DOOR, available NOW!!). Not only that, but I get to join my fellow bandmates & commence recording on a new Dr. Pants EP this afternoon. Life is good, friends, life is good. But more about that in a second.
The free mp3s at doctorpants.com are still the album version of "Sarsaparilla Girl" and a new acoustic demo of a song called "Tom The Lodger" that you may have heard us play at a Full Circle show. I am about to change them out, but I want to give you a final chance to grab them if you haven't already. I'll take them down this coming Friday, the 27th. Not sure yet if I'm going to put more up, or what they will be...We shall see. I've given away almost half the GARDENING album for free already, so I'm going to have to get creative.
Meanwhile, I will be posting nightly blogs for the next three nights about the recording. So check back here or at www.myspace.com/drpants5. Should be fun. I hope you all are as excited as I am about this new record. I'll post a rough mix or two when I have them also.
Drop a line. Keep in touch. Drop by Kenneth, Aaron & Dustin's myspace pages (Flyover States is Dustin...they're all on Dr. Pants' top friends) and say hi to them, too.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: IT'S EP TIME
That's right, folks...It's the year of the EP here at Little Weasel/Dr. Pants central. Here's the skinny:
So, if you've been at the last couple of shows, you've heard me mention that Dr. Pants was more than likely going to record an EP this year. I think it really will happen. Dustin and I are currently attempting to hammer out a schedule as to when that might happen, but I'm hoping to have it in your grubby little hands by the end of the summer. THE CUSACK-LOGGINS EP is still the working title, and it will have those two songs on it, as well as several others.
Also, the first release of new music by WEIRD FILES is more than half way finished, and will be an EP as well. It's going to include the track "The Crimes, Pt. 1" (as heard on the WEIRD FILES myspace page), as well as several other new compositions. Not sure when exactly we'll get it out, but hopefully by the June date at the OKC Info Shop (see myspace.com/weirdfiles for calendar info). I have every intention of reissuing the WERKS & WERKS 2 albums under the WEIRD FILES name this year as well, but we'll have to see. WERKS 2 is more than likely going to come first, since I am encountering some problems with the cover art for the original WERKS (the main problem being that I can't find any of the files for the original artwork).
Also, look forward to the first single by Juicyfruit Jenkins, Little Weasel's own Austrian Electro-Funk duo. They're about halfway done with it, so perhaps we'll see that this summer as well.
Man...Am I going to have any time to breathe during all this? Apparently not, but that's okay. Stay tuned here to doctorpants.com for continuing updates, and to myspace.com/drpants5, myspace.com/weirdfiles, myspace.com/crackerandcochise, etc. Don't forget that Cracker & Cochise's first CD single is currently available at all Dr. Pants, Weird Files and Cracker & Cochise shows! See you June 17th at Galileo!!

news & notes, 2/4
Okay, so first and foremost, don't forget that Dr. Pants is at Belle Isle Brewery tomorrow night! We'll probably start playing around 10 pm or so. It should be awesomely rocking. Come support us, since it's our first time there. Let's show them just how awesome Dr. Pants really is!!
Meanwhile, you may have noticed that the free mp3s here and at our myspace page have changed. Enjoy free downloads of "The Hexagon Song" from the GARDENING album, as well as a demo version of the new song "It All Depends" (our favorite show opener at the moment). I'll leave these up for a while, and then who knows, maybe we'll do one more set. Response for the last pair was a tad underwhelming, so grab this free music and show us that you love us!!
See you tomorrow night!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE
Yes, indeed, Merry Christmas to all out there in pants-land. We had hoped to put together a fabulous December Madness show for you this year, but alas it did not happen. We should have plenty of rock to go around in the new year, though. Still time to order your Dr. Pants cds from CD Baby for the holidays, so go to the "get cds" page and rock!
Meanwhile, in case you haven't heard, I (David) have started a sort of "side project" that will now cover some of the weirder aspects of my music that don't really fit with what Dr. Pants is doing these days. This project is called WEIRD FILES, and it has its own MySpace page that you can visit by clicking here. The WEIRD FILES Christmas single, "Christmas 2007", is available for free download right now for a limited time! It's the "Revolution 9" of Christmas songs; a far-out, 7 & 1/2 minute sound collage sure to get you into the holiday spirit!!
That's all I've got right now. Be sure and mark your calendars for January 22nd at Belle Isle Brewery. It's our first show there, so come out and support us!!
Sat, Nov 3rd, 2007 12:00 AM CDT
We must continue to bring forth the magic.
I don't know what that means, but I do know that it's time for an update, so here goes...
Our gigs in Kansas City and Chicago are not happening. While this is a bummer, I have to trust that it is for the best. We are working on maybe getting some things lined up in town (like an opening set or two for some other folks) in November and December, but we'll have to see. It's a tough world out there. Things don't always work out how you'd like them to.
It's been an interesting month or so to be the leader of Dr. Pants. I've learned a lot about myself this month in terms of why I do this and what that all means. I know I state the obvious when I say that the music business is changing, and that we really don't know how things are going to turn out. I do know that, at this point in history, it is quite possibly harder to financially sustain one's musical art than it has ever been. That said, Dr. Pants is going to be around, for a while, and we'll see where we land on the other end of this "transitional period".
For the record, we're going to try and make a video, hopefully by spring time, so keep an eye out for that. We're attempting to reschedule our KC/Chicago shows for some time after the first of the year. We'll be doing Galileo, possibly Full Circle, and popping up at the open mic band night at Belle Isle after the first of the year, too. We'll continue to debut new songs, so expect the setlist to continue to morph. And, there will be lots going on with various "side projects", including (but not limited to) a new single from Cracker & Cochise, the debut of Weird Files (an evolution of certain musical elements previously associated with Dr. Pants), and more. Stay tuned for details.
Meanwhile, more gear was stolen from Dustin and the rest of the Charlie Hall band...Please go to myspace.com/flyoverstates and drop Dustin a line for descriptions on what to look for at pawn shops, etc.
Buzz us at the myspace or here at doctorpants.com. We'd love to hear from you.

David (and Kenneth and Dustin and Aaron)

THE BEST SHOW EVER.
No, this is not hyperbole. It is not a guilt trip, either, although that is tempting. Tonight's show was, in fact, the best Dr. Pants show ever. And I am pretty sure it's just going to get better from here.
I don't know how to get more people to come see us, but it is time to try harder, because I believe now more than ever in what we are doing.
Thanks to the few, the proud, who were there, and thanks especially to those who brought friends. Thanks to Dustin, Aaron & Kenneth for playing their hearts out, to KC for lending her voice to several tasty numbers as always, and to Jason Bondy, the ever reliable and skilled sound guy.
That's all I've got, without launching into all the things I said this post wasn't at the beginning.
See you in September.

3) Well, we're still hoping to play a show in late Feb. or early March at VZDs, but this is tentative at best. We're definitely doing Galileo on March 30th, though, so we will see you all there. The faithful are starving for a Pants show...We will deliver.
Word. See you on Hollywood Squares.

SARSAPARILLA GIRL and HEY ABE LINCOLN free for a limited time...
Okay, so here's the deal, people. I have been debating for a looonng time about whether Dr. Pants should be offering music for free download online. On the one hand, I really do believe in my heart that music is worth paying for (this is one of the intended meanings of the current Little Weasel slogan, "Music is worth it"), and by that I mean our music and ANYONE ELSE'S MUSIC as well. If I like somebody's record, I will buy it. If I like their song, I will buy it. The facts are, though, that my own beliefs could be impeding the progress of my band, and my ability to promote it. Therefore, we're trying something different around here for a while. At this time, Sarsaparilla Girl and Hey Abe Lincoln are going to be available for free here at doctorpants.com, and at our myspace page as well. We're going to try it for a couple of months, and see how it goes. I'd like to say that I personally think that these are two of the best songs on the record, so it's not like I'm offering the not-the-best songs for free. We'll also be trying out some promotional cd singles with these songs on them, that you can pick up at some of the local shops. The only other thing I'll say on the subject is that if you download these songs and you like them, PLEASE buy the cd from CD Baby through doctorpants.com, or pay to download the whole record from iTunes. Music IS worth it, my friends, and I know you believe it, too. I apologize if I seem like a douchebag with all my moralizing concerning paying for music...I just want to be able to see me and my friends make a living from this someday, or at least be able to keep doing what they're doing.
Word, kids. See you on Hollywood Squares.

the state of things...
...here at the Dr. Pants Medical Funk Facility, that is. I could go on and on about the state of our nation, the world, etc., but that's not really my bag.
So, after great deliberation, I have put the guestbook back up. I will just have to keep a close eye on it and remove any weasely activity as it occurs. I value the opportunity to hear from you, the listeners, more than I do the time I am going to spend cleaning out improper posts. So there you go. Conversely, in order to help spur on said activity on the guestbook, I will be attempting to post to the news/journal page more regularly, even if there's not much going on. These posts will probably very closely resemble whatever blog posts we do on the Dr. Pants myspace as well. Sorry, can't keep up creating two different sets of entries for two different sites. I just don't have that many words within me.
Finally, if you didn't know already, we had to cancel our Stillwater show that was supposed to happen here in a week or two. Over the next two months (which will be quiet ones for Dr. Pants...we will not be playing any more shows that I know of before January), we here at the Funk Facility will be doing our best to make sure that this type of thing doesn't happen again in the future. Meanwhile, since there won't be any shows to go to, stock up on Dr. Pants cds so that you won't get lonely without us. Of course, they also make great gifts, so give Dr. Pants this holiday season.
More soon...you can bet on it.

Acoustic Magic
So we rocked the Dr. Pants Acoustic Magic for the first time Saturday night opening for Grandpa Griffith. Acoustic Magic is our new name for what used to be called Dr. Pants, Jr. It went smashingly, I must say, and Grandpa G were utterly awesome as usual.
We've got a Stillwater show in November, so if you know folks in Stillwater, tell them to come check out Dr. Pants at Third Place on the 18th. We're still trying to find a home for our December Madness show this year, so if you have any ideas about a venue that would want to book that (here in OKC, that is) let us know. That will probably be the next time we play here at home, so help us make it happen!
Meanwhile, the new record is available on iTunes, as well as many other fine digital music services like Rhapsody, etc. It will be on Emusic before too long. You can still get it at Audiri.com, as well as Radioradio.com. If you're a Last.fm member, become a Dr. Pants listener on Last.fm! Also, we need fans to write reviews of the record(s) on CD Baby, iTunes, Audiri, and other sites. If you love Dr. Pants, write a review saying so! This will help other people take a chance on what we do.
We hope that October finds you well. As always, drop us a line and say hi. We'll write you back, provided that we haven't passed out from exhaustion.

an attempt to recap the best show in rock history...or at least rock's last 3 days or so
I really can?t describe what Friday night was like, but I?ll try anyway.
It was a really great night, full of great moments, both onstage and off. The band rocked so hard (thanks Kenneth, Aaron and Dustin), and Jason Bondy, our sound guy, did a great job (thank you Jason). I was interviewed for the MidCity Advocate (I think it will be out this Friday). All sorts of people came to see the show. Thanks to everyone who showed up.
Dustin and Flyover-States? opening set was awesome (thanks for that, you guys). Dr. Pants played two rockin? sets, and even though the crowd had thinned out a bit by the time the second set started, we still rocked it really hard.
It feels great to have the cd out, and to know that people have it and are probably listening to it as I speak (at least one person probably is). It feels great to have played a good show, and to know that other great shows are coming up.
I hope you all will join us at Mesta Festa this Saturday, as we rock Mesta Park into a pile of indiscriminate rubble. I?ll post the time as soon as I know it.
GARDENING IN A TORNADO is now available on CD Baby (go to doctorpants.com and click the ?Buy Cds? link in the menu at the top), and at Wherehouse Music on NW Expressway. It will be in more OKC area stores soon. It will, of course, be available at Mesta Festa and all the upcoming shows. In case you hadn?t noticed, we?ll be opening for TRAINWRECK again at VZDs on 10/6. You don?t want to miss it, especially if you missed the last time.
Word ?em up.

A Day That Will Live On...
FRIDAY WAS A BIG DAY.
In case anyone has not been paying attention, we played a show opening for TRAINWRECK (featuring Kyle Gass of Tenacious D fame) Friday night. It was great...We had a blast. The crowd, made up mostly of folks who had never heard of us, seemed skeptical at first, but we managed to win them over. Trainwreck were pretty unreal...If you have a chance to check them out, please do.
The other reason Friday was a big day is that GARDENING IN A TORNADO was finally sent to the manufacturer!! I can barely believe it. It feels like I have somehow managed to grow a third arm or something...It's that kind of level of accomplishment for me. Considering that we started recording this record well over 2 years ago...It's really amazing that the moment is finally here.
Kenneth, Aaron and I are really excited to be doing this Dr. Pants thing, at least I think so. I know I am, and they seem to be as well. We still don't have an "official" drummer, but Dean, Dustin and Chris are all great guys, and we appreciate all the work they do for us.
I just wanted to take the chance to let everyone know that I'm grateful. Grateful to all the Dr. Pants members I mentioned above, grateful to all those who helped me finish the record, and grateful to anyone and everyone who's listening. Rock on, y'all. I'll let you know when the cds get here.
Fri, Jul 7th, 2006 12:00 AM CDT
rock and roll
Okay, so we mastered the record on Wednesday!! Thank God. We will be sending it off to press some time within the next couple of weeks...It won't make it back in time for the Trainwreck show, but it will be here in PLENTY of time for our newly scheduled CD RELEASE PARTY, at GALILEO on September 15th!! I am thrilled to have it on the calendar, and there's really nowhere else I'd rather celebrate. Galileo has been there for Dr. Pants since the beginning, and continues to be a beacon in the darkness that is the local music scene.
Meanwhile, we had a grand time at Nichols Hills Plaza last night...Really rocked it pretty good, I think. It's still standing, but I hear that Chesapeake's going to take care of that some time soon for us anyway (ha ha).
If you are someone who does art, and want to put in a last minute submission for potential artwork on my record, you can email me here at the website. I'm talking probably by Monday at the latest. I am going to be making my decision around then and getting all the design stuff done next week, hopefully. So, if you want to throw something my way, please do so ASAP!!
More soon.

FOAMING AT THE MOUTH
I can TASTE the new record. We are SO close. It almost hurts...The most stressful part is that we want to get it out by the time we open for Trainwreck, and that's the real challenge.
Meanwhile, we're going to be playing in Nichols Hills Plaza as part of Starbucks' Starbright Concert Series on 7/13, so come out for that...You'll have more details when I have them.
I am the last person to want to appear overconfident, but I really think this record is great. I feel like Dr. Pants sits on the precipice of something incredible, and this is the moment where I get to breathe in a breath before I am submerged in the future.
I hope you all have a chance to come to at least one of the shows. We will make it worth your time and money.

Home Again
So, for those of you who don't know, KC and I were at the Kerrville Folk Festival this past weekend. It was a crazy weekend...The festival is 18 days long, so we really only saw it get started. KC was a finalist in the New Folk competition, which is a competition for "up and comers" in the folk world. She was selected as one of 32 finalists out of 800 ENTRIES. Amazing. She was not one of the 6 winners, but that's okay. We learned a lot, heard a lot of great music, played well for a whole lot of people...It was a great experience.
Meanwhile, continuing to mix the record this week. It sounds better and better every day. I can't wait to get it out there for you all to hear. The big news is that Dr. Pants will be opening for TRAINWRECK, featuring Kyle Gass of the legendary TENACIOUS D, at the end of July!! Friday the 28th to be specific, at none other than VZDs, the finest rock club in OKC. We are peeing our pants with excitement around here, and we hope that you can all make the show. Also, some time within the next few days, I will be posting another mix for you to hear on the music page...Please keep an eye out. Remember that ALL PRICES HAVE BEEN DROPPED on the existing Dr. Pants catalogue...Get them while you can. I haven't decided whether to remove the two free EPs when the new record comes out or not, but just in case, download those while you can, too.
More soon...

MORE MUSIC
There is a new rough mix on the music page...check it out.
Also, we have lowered the price of the FEEZLE DAY album on CD Baby to only $9.97!! Bargain basement...get it while you can...

Update, Yo
Okay, so on some level, I feel like there's not a lot to say, but I also feel like I owe it to everybody to keep in touch, let you know what's going on, even if it's not an assload.
As it says on the front page, tracking for the record is FINISHED, and we are heading into mixing. The task of mixing is something that I can't really do myself, or be super-involved in...A reality which frustrates my control freak nature to a great degree. However, I am currently in the process of figuring out who can best approach this task and still serve the best interest of the record, and I am optimistic that it will turn out well. I am still very, very hopeful that we will achieve a summer release...It's definitely the goal.
Meanwhile, we're also gearing up to play what hopefully will be a bunch of shows in the summer and fall. We're going to be teaming up with some other bands and putting on some killer double bills, so be on the lookout. Currently, the next show we have set is for June at Full Circle, but hopefully by the time we get to that date, there'll be a crapload more on the calendar...
I have uploaded some photos from the studio, so check those out on the photo page. Jason Bondy, our live sound man, took them, and he possesses the mad photography skills, as you will see.
I have posted one (count 'em, 1) rough mix from the new record for you to listen to...It's a surprise which song it is, so go listen. Click on the white text that says "Surprise Rough Mix", and then on one of the "Listen to..." links. Keep in mind that sonically it will get a good bit better by the time it's all done.
I think that's it...So much, and yet so little. I am soooo ready for this record to be finished.
Word. See you all soon, I hope.

Important Announcement
Alright, kids.
There are some changes going down in the Dr. Pants universe...Some of them are only in my mind at this point, but some of them are material, and serve only to make the entity that is Dr. Pants a greater, more worthwhile thing for all its participants...Both the musicmakers, and the musiclisteners.
Most importantly, I am announcing that as of the arrival of the new Dr. Pants record (hopefully around the beginning of June), all of the old Dr. Pants records will cease to exist, at least for the moment. Replacing them will be a comprehensive compilation of all the older material, with an emphasis on the songs that can actually be heard at a Dr. Pants show. So, this means that Feezle Day, The First Four Years, Werks, and Werks 2 will only be available for a few more months, in ANY FORM. Digital, hard copy, whatever. If you have been waiting to buy these records, but just didn't feel it was the right time, the time is NOW. It is possible I will choose to bring them back at a later date, but I can't make any promises. So, if you want Feezle Day, go to iTunes and download it, or buy a hard copy from CD Baby. If you live in the OKC area, you can buy a hard copy directly from me. Werks 2 and First Four Years are available for download at Audiri.com/drpants, or as hard copies from myself. Werks is only available as a hard copy from yours truly.
I am not doing this to instigate some sort of feeding frenzy to create revenue for myself...I just think it's time to simplify things, and to create a situation where the material I'm offering is absolutely, 100% stuff that I feel I can stand behind as an artist. Some of the older stuff doesn't fall into that category, and that's why it's going away for now.
Don't forget that there are 2 free ep's available for download on the music page as well.
Meanwhile, Kenneth, KC and I will be doing Dr. Pants, Jr. at Full Circle April 15th, so please come check it out. We'll be premiering some new material, and a good time will be had by all. There will be more shows going on the books very soon, so stay tuned.
Word. Thanks to everyone who supports what I do in any way.
Sat, Mar 11th, 2006 12:00 AM CST
Why Is Regis Philbin a Genius?
Because we love Dr. Pants!! Thanks to everyone who showed the love by coming out last night...I apologize to anyone who felt as though I didn't talk to them enough, or abandoned them mid-conversation...I get the worst case of ADD the night of a show. Something about the adrenaline, or the severe right-brainedness of performing music, or something...I have no idea why. I have the most difficult time maintaining any sort of conversation with anyone but the people that I'm playing the gig with. Very strange.
Thanks so much to Kenneth, Dean and Justin for playing, thanks to Jason for running sound as always. Thanks to KC as always for singing...Babe, when you get up there on stage with me, I have to take my game up a notch, and I appreciate that.
As we get closer to the new record coming out, we're going to be making some changes in the Dr. Pants camp, in terms of setlists, overall vibe...I think that if I learned anything from last night's show, it was that we've got to get streamlined up in this mug. Granted, this is rock and roll, and nothing about REAL rock and roll is ever that polished, but if you, the PEOPLE, are going to come shell out $5 or more to see us play, we owe it to you to give you a great musical experience. More about these things as they happen...
Meanwhile, all the actual tracking for GARDENING IN A TORNADO is FINISHED!! (not to be confused with finnish.) This means that we're moving into the mixing stage, and we hopefully will have it in your hands by the beginning of June or so. Stay tuned for more on that. I will have some rough mixes up for listening soon, as well as some photos from the studio.
Word, and I'll see you on Hollywood Squares.

Mo' Rekkids
All right, so here's the deal...There's this website called Audiri.com (www.audiri.com/drpants), and they started out as just another purevolume type of place where you could post a few songs, do an artist profile, etc. NOW, however, they have created a situation where independent artists can upload songs for pay-to-play downloads, and make them available IMMEDIATELY. This is great, since there was about a 4 month wait for CD Baby to get the Feezle Day album up on iTunes. So, the complete albums of "The First Four Years" (a collection of pre-"Feezle Day" songs, many of which we still play live such as "A Guy Named Matt", "Great Job With Me", and "One Month") and "Werks 2" (the "side project" I put out early last year, featuring "Egg Dance", "7th Heathen", and "Incidental Music From the Cyberpunk Episode of the Jetsons") are now available in the digital domain. I tried to price the songs so that if you get all the songs from one of the albums, the total is roughly equivalent to the $10 you would spend buying the CD-R directly from me. Audiri doesn't give quite enough webspace to post the first "Werks" in addition to the other two, but I'll be able to make it available digitally in good time. This is good stuff, so please go check it out. Meanwhile, we're back in the studio this week...I'll try and post something later in the week about that.
Word,
David

FOR THE RECORD...Literally
Wow. I'm really glad the holidays and everything are over on some level, but there's a part of me that is still on relaxation time. I mean, I never get that much of a break, seeing how I work in retail for my day job, but various other portions of my life, including Dr. Pants, did take most of December and January off.
So, the big news is that we are going to FINISH THIS RECORD! It's official, people. The money has come through and you will hopefully have a new Dr. Pants record IN YOUR HANDS by early summer. The material sounds amazing...I really think that every musician's goal, whenever they make a record, should be to make their favorite record of the moment. Maybe not their favorite record of all time (although, one can hope), but at least their favorite record of the moment. I feel like I did that with Feezle Day, although most of you probably feel bewildered by that record most of the time. It was very much what I wanted to do at the time, though, and Gardening In A Tornado is very much what I want to do NOW. This one won't bewilder you NEAR as much...I am really hoping that it will make you laugh, cry, and rock your ass off (just like Wesley Willis, baby). I think I am making my favorite record of the moment, and I can only hope that even one of you decides it's your favorite, too.
KC, Kenneth and I will be Dr. Pants, Jr-ing at Full Circle on February 11th, so please check that out. If you don't know, it's a small, intimate setting that's good for just playing some songs. Dr. Pants, the original, the rockin', the legend, will be at Galileo March 10th.
Peace out, y'all.

Madness, Pants & THE FUTURE
Hey kids.
I think that first, I have to start off by saying that the DECEMBER MADNESS show was one of the most fun shows I've ever played...Thanks to Kenneth, as always, and to James, Chris, and Jason for making the music what it was. Thanks to Jerry for all of his help as a sounding board and collaborator, thanks to Allison for the great signs, thanks to Mark and Amber for being such great elves. Thanks to Galileo for putting up with all of my silliness.
PLEASE stay tuned in the coming year for the release of GARDENING IN A TORNADO, the new Dr. Pants album. I am pee-my-pants excited about this record...If you want to know how YOU can help it come out, please email me (go to the contact page for the address, etc.).
It looks at this point as though we may be taking January off, and that's really fine with me. In order to bring you the best year of shows, records, and everything else that we can, it might take a few weeks to regroup after the holidays. I promise, though, once we get to February 11th at Full Circle, it will be full speed ahead, and we'll have the kind of year that many bands only dream about! I believe this...I believe this truly will be the YEAR OF THE PANTS, and hopefully, you all believe with me...
I wish for everyone a great Christmas, or whatever holiday you celebrate, and a great new year. We'll see you soon-
David

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
Unfortunately, I had to turn off my messageboard today, because some unsavory folks out there in internet land decided that it was in some way appropriate/okay to start posting links to porn sites there...This saddens me, and if one of the culprits happens to be reading this right now, THANKS FOR MAKING A MOCKERY OF THE EARNEST EFFORTS OF AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST. You should be ashamed of yourself. Hopefully, it will be possible to turn the messageboard back on some time soon...I'll let you know here if I do.

IT'S DECEMBER MADNESS!!!
What is DECEMBER MADNESS, you ask? About 4 years ago, I had the idea of making the Dr. Pants show in the month of December into something special. I mean, I always wanted to integrate a somewhat theatrical element into what we do (increasing overall entertainment value in the process), but I thought that the holiday season would be a good time to step it up a notch. That year (2000), at our December show (most of the original Dr. Pants lineup was still in tow), we did several unique-to-that-show "DECEMBER MADNESS" pieces of music, as well as some poetry performed by members of the audience. It was all very well-received, and in my head, DECEMBER MADNESS was something we would do every year from then on.
Of course, by the following year, there really wasn't a Dr. Pants lineup per se, and I was heading into a hiatus of sorts. So, this year, once I got the ball rolling again, I decided it was time that DECEMBER MADNESS be re-born, and really take its rightful place as an OKC local music legend.
So, I invite you, one and all, to come and join us as we celebrate DECEMBER MADNESS. Be prepared for a grand time. Together, we will establish an OKC music tradition that will hopefully live on for years to come!!

ITunes, shows, how are the great pyramids linked to rock & roll...
Okay, so the hugest news is that the FEEZLE DAY album is FINALLY available on ITunes, after a long wait...Now you can purchase any song from that record individually for $0.99 each, or download the whole album for $9.99 (an absolute steal, seeing as how it's a double CD, and costs $15 when you buy the hard copy). It is also available on some other digital music sites as well, including MusicNet, BuyMusic, Bitmunk, MSN Music, MusicNow, PassAlong, Chondo, Sony Connect, Ruckus, and MP3tunes. If you routinely buy music from any of those services, get yo self some Dr. Pants!!
Meanwhile, I also want to thank everyone who came to our shows in October...The show with Bring Back the Guns and Oida went really well, especially considering it was a Sunday night in OKC. Everybody was happy, I think, and I really appreciate all the positive feedback I got on my attempt to do something different. I have a feeling it won't be the last "boombox" set that I do. Look forward to more of that.
I know I've been promising new pictures for a while now, and there will be some soon. Also, recording on the new album will continue at the end of November, and hopefully I'll have a rough mix or two to post so you guys can check it out. Meanwhile, I'm trying to make the December show the biggest thing we've done this year, so look forward to that and TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS!! Dr. Pants is here to stay, and to rock your ass like a hurricane, people. I'll see you on 12/10!!
DON"T FORGET, 2 FREE EP's ON THE MUSIC PAGE!!

Okay, so just a quick note to let everyone know that, if you are interested, I changed the running order on the Extra Pants EP on the music page (it's my record, I have license to do that), so if you DO download it, download it with "Calm" as the first song.
Meanwhile, trying to get ready for the shows at the end of the month. More details soon.

Mesta Festa, yo
Just got finished playing at the Mesta Festa about an hour ago...It was quite good fun. These days, it feels great just to play, and to even just get a little bit of gratitude from those who happened to be there.
Thanks to John and all the Mesta Park people for the opportunity and hospitality...Thanks to KC for lending her gorgeous vocalizations to the proceedings as always. Thanks to anyone who was there and listened.
Stay tuned for updates on the new record, new photos, etc.
Drop me a line anytime about anything...

The Day After...
Thanks to everyone for coming out to Full Circle last night...It was a good crowd. The venue was happy, I was happy...Chris and KC were happy.
I think that playing a venue like a bookstore has its advantages and disadvantages. The fact that, after having played two shows there, the pros very much outweigh the cons at this point is a good thing.
It was really great to have my brother and his roommate at the show (see previous journal entry) and really great to have other great musicians in the audience listening (Shannon, Joel, Tyler, the previously mentioned brother and roommate). I am thankful to have been given the opportunity to do this show, and I am very much looking forward to the next one...
Check back here for pics from the show, and hopefully more info on when we might see the new album come out. See you on the 24th...Don't forget the 2 free ep's...

Gratitude
I just have to take a minute and acknowledge that my brother, who was until last week living in New Orleans, and everyone from there that he cares about are safe. I have to speak that in a public arena, and say how thankful I am. I don't know why all this is happening, and I certainly don't feel very optimistic about how it will all play out in some ways, but I simply have to declare that I will always be thankful that my brother and his loved ones got out of there when they did.
I hope that everyone is coping with the insanity of this tragedy in some sort of helpful way, and if you have been displaced from your home, or someone you love has, you have my deepest sympathy, and my prayers...
I hope that I see some of you this Saturday, and that we can all enjoy an evening of music together, despite circumstances.
David

Looking Forward
Well, here we are, on the cusp of the fall, and at the Funk Facility it's all about the shows...The shows and finding a way to get the record finished. The shows will help bring in some cash to do that (it really does cost money to make a record...Don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise), but don't think that's the only reason we're playing them...
Dr. Pants has never been more important to me, and I hope that all our performances this fall will convey that. We will do our best to make the shows something to remember, no matter who is in the line up that night, no matter whether it's a full band or DP Jr. show, or even if it's something crazy that I've never done before. It will all culminate (hopefully) at our soon-to-be-annual DECEMBER MADNESS show at Galileo on 12/10...There will be lots of fun surprises in store at that one.
And it all starts in 2 weeks at Full Circle, Saturday the 10th at 7 pm. I truly do hope to see you all there, and that you will bring friends. We will do our best to make it a lovely time for all.
Long live the Pants,
David

True Stories
So in the record store biz, you run into a lot of colorful folks, of course...as in any service industry. For a number of years now, I've interacted with a guy whose name is--NO SHIT--MIKE RUTHERFORD. For those in the know, this name has meaning. It's the name of the guitarist for 80s behemoths GENESIS and MIKE & THE MECHANICS. Now, of course, we record store geeks have always made jokes about it, but we've never mentioned the coincidence TO Mike. I guess we just figured there was no point.
Well, last night at work my friend and coworker Jerry decided otherwise. He asked Mike what he thought about the coincidence, and Mike replied that he didn't really know if it meant anything but--AND I QUOTE--"I know if I had his money and he had a feather up his ass we'd both be tickled." You can't make this stuff up.

All sorts of web stuff
I have to say that it's pretty overwhelming...This whole "increasing our presence on the web" thing...Not only do I have an official Dr. Pants website to deal with, but now I have smaller "mini-sites" on Purevolume, GarageBand, AND MySpace to keep up...It's a lot of work, but I keep hoping that Dr. Pants might find our biggest fans out there somewhere on the web...I hope that's true. Meanwhile, please check out these sites if you haven't already (links to all of them are on the links page), and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go to Garageband.com on Monday, July 25th and rate the song "Under The Lights"! Rate it well!! Here's the link again: http://www.GarageBand.com/go/EDURXXIV0P Seriously, no one has the power to expose Dr. Pants music to others more than you, my friends, my family, my fans...It really is in your hands more than mine. I can make a million websites, and probably only do a fraction of what you guys have the power to do. And let me say again, I REALLY appreciate your support.
And don't forget the 2 free EP's!! More info in the last entry right underneath this one...
More soon...

Much to share, much to share...
Let's get down to business: 2 FREE E.P.'s, people, of previously unreleased material. We're cleaning out our closet here at the Funk Facility, as we prepare for the eventual arrival of the new album. Here's the lowdown:
EXTRA PANTS
This is 4 acoustic songs, all of which were written roughly around the same time as a lot of the material on the new album, but that just didn't make the cut for one reason or another (the main one being the desire to keep the album to a slim 12 or 13 songs). They are all songs that I love, however, and I am excited to bring them to the public (at least in some form). Now I have an excuse to start playing them at shows again. These are very much WARTS-AND-ALL recordings, but that's an attitude that all of the Dr. Pants faithful should be comfy with by now.
THE FEEZLE & THE REMIX
This is an E.P. of 4 remixes of songs from FEEZLE DAY, done by my friend Josh Heilaman from Oida (pronounced WEE-DAH). He did these a couple of years ago, and I was pretty thrilled. He took my songs and made something new and (even more) challenging out of them, and I am proud to have been involved.
Please listen to the songs in the order in which they are presented, from top to bottom. For instance, "Fries & A Coke (Live)" should be considered Track 1 on EXTRA PANTS and "Maybe Today" should be considered Track 4.
Meanwhile, tracks from WERKS, WERKS 2, and THE FIRST FOUR YEARS are all available for listening on the music page as well. All of these records will be available on CD Baby soon, but for now, if you'd like one, e-mail us and we'll work it out. Either that, or they are available at shows. Remember, folks...The more of the old cds you buy, the sooner the new one can come out! I appreciate your support!
More soon,
David

Making a Record, pt. 1
Spent last Thursday, yesterday and today in the studio...The past two days were spent laying down bass and drum tracks for six songs (the remaining six that had not been started), and last Thursday was spent doing the one acoustic, unaccompanied song for the record (coincidentally also the likely title song, "Gardening In a Tornado"). I feel very at home in the studio, especially when I'm working with people like I'm working with now. Brian, Dustin, Quint and Josh are really helping me make it happen, and I am very grateful.
It feels phenomenal to finally get a song like "Sarsaparilla Girl" happening in the studio after all this time...I mean, I have literally waited years to record that song. The experience of making this record is like finally being able to buy a house after living in apartments for so many years...It's a relief, a joy, and, emotionally, WAY overdue. I have high hopes for this record...I will keep you all posted as to its progress. Hopefully, we'll be able to knock the rest out in August...At least, that's the plan.

show post-mortem
My freshman year of high school when I lived in Maryland, that's what we in the drama club used to call the meeting in which we talked about a production we had just finished...post-mortem. Always seemed a bit morbid to me, but in this situation I think it's appropriate...
First of all, thank you to all who came to the show. I really, really, really appreciate your support of what I do, and I absolutely could not do it without you (although I might still try). It was great to see some familiar faces (and to meet some new ones).
Second of all, thank you to So Long Goodbyes who opened the show at such short notice...You guys kick ass and I'll try to have you back some time in the future. You're going places for sure.
Third of all, thank you to John and Chris for making the "theatrical intro" to the show what it was. I know that I am truly lucky to have friends like you who will participate in my crazy schemes...
Fourth, thanks to Kenneth, Dean, Ryan and KC for playing well. And to Jason for running sound well.
Despite bizarre sound difficulties, we played a good show. I think I will remember yesterday for a couple of reasons: 1) Zac Maloy's dad came up to me and talked to me while we were setting up for the gig (truly random), and 2) my friend Natasha from high school saw me before the gig also, and even though I did tell her to come back for the show later, I totally FORGOT to mention that I would be playing a song later that had been inspired by her, which she had never heard. Tasha, if you're reading this, you totally have to email me!
So, I guess my true evaluation of the show is that it was definitely a new beginning--at least, 24 hours later, it really feels that way. It wasn't the best show Dr. Pants is ever going to play, and it wasn't the best audience we're ever going to have. But it was a start...and you have to start somewhere.
Stay tuned here for more content within the next week or two, and for notice on where we will be playing in the next couple of months. Thanks again to those of you who made the date. Y'all be my peeps fo' life.
Word,
David

here we go...
Alright, folks...here we go. Maybe some of you have been wondering what happened to Dr. Pants, or why it's taken so long for a new record, or other things like that, and I intend to address those things...NOW!
Dr. Pants never really went away. It was always there in some form. However, I did have moments over the last 4 years in which I wasn't sure if it always would be. A lot of the last 4 years I spent evaluating whether I truly felt called to make music...whether that was truly what I was meant to do (I know...pretty deep stuff from a guy who raps about his pants). I also got married during that time, to K.C. Clifford, as some of you know. Basically, life catches up with you sometimes, and you have to figure out what your priorities are, what you have to do, need to do, and want to do. Also, by the end of 2001, all the people who had been involved in the original incarnation of Dr. Pants had left the group, and I was very much at a loss for what do do next. It took me another 3 years or so to figure that out, I think. This was the past 4 years for me, and I have come out on the other end knowing that Dr. Pants is something that I want to do for the rest of my life, and even though it may not always look the same, the same spirit will always be behind it. It will be fun, it will be uncompromising, and it will hopefully rock everyone's ass off. I am ready to do this full on, and I will not sit around on my ass one more second. This is my declaration of purpose, my friends- you heard it here first.
