CITY JAMS

Hey everyone!

It's been a little quiet in Pants-world as of late, but we're fixin' to change all that. As you may (or may not) know, I (David) am currently out on tour with K.C. (Clifford, my bride and partner in this craziness known as the music world), performing her music in venues across the midwest and east coast. I decided to attempt an exercise, a plan, a project if you will, to flex my creative muscles and to get some new Pants music out there to all our fans and friends. Thus was born "CITY JAMS", a group of songs, each of which is about a different city we are visiting on this tour. The best part? We're GIVING THEM AWAY FOR FREE. Each one will just be a little Garageband recording I make on this here laptop I'm typing on right now, but they are already shaping up to be some fun ditties.

What do you need to do to get them??

All you have to do is JOIN the Dr. Pants email list (up in the top right hand corner of this page) before September 1st and I'll send an mp3 of each one to you as soon as it's finished. First up is Minneapolis/St. Paul. You'll get the lyrics in the email as well.

It's that simple. Time to rock to some CITY JAMS.

More soon,
David, Dustin, Aaron & Kenneth

The Legend of Kenny Loggins "Craphat"

Okay, first of all, let me be clear that it is CRAP HAT, just as one word. In case you haven't listened to the song yet.

I (David) am from Oklahoma City, but back in high school and college (especially in college) I had a number of friends who lived in Tulsa. I used to go to Tulsa for a day or two on breaks from school--Christmas, Spring Break, etc.

My Tulsa friends were inspiring, to say the least. Most certainly a creative, hipster brand of people. One of them, Brian Byrne, played guitar in the first incarnation of Dr. Pants. Some of the stuff they came up with is classic and survives to this day (at least, in my mind it certainly does). Kenny Loggins "Craphat" is a perfect example.

The story goes like this: one night said group of friends were sitting at Village Inn (the 24 hour restaurant of choice). This was not an unusual occurrence. Whatever discussion they were in most likely reached a lull, and a man named Tom, out of nowhere pipes up with: "Hey, did you guys know that Kenny Loggins put out an album in the seventies called "Kenny Loggins-Craphat"? And that on the front cover he was literally wearing a hat that looked like it was made out of shit?" Outlandish as this tale was, it certainly pales in comparison to the fact that the rest of my friends present at the time BELIEVED HIM. I mean, had I been there I probably would have WANTED to believe him...Kind of an unlikely story, but not altogether implausible. I mean, some of the album covers from the seventies are pretty ridiculous, aren't they? Is the "Craphat" concept really that much more obnoxious than, say, "Sloppy Seconds" by Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show (go look that one up)?

So, fast forward to 24 hours later when said group of folks is back at (you guessed it) Village Inn once again. Tom breaks it to them that he made it up. This, of course, makes it all the more awesome and brilliant.

This is how I remember it...and I heard it second hand to begin with, so people who were there for real may want to add addenda to my story. Go for it. But this urban legend simply must be retold, and simply had to be immortalized in song. Hence the third verse of "Kenny Loggins", from our new release, THE CUSACK-LOGGINS EP. Enjoy.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS (IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY)

Greetings! It really is upon us--at long last THE CUSACK-LOGGINS EP
IS HERE!! As previously announced, we will be celebrating the release
of this fabulous piece of goodness by playing a really fantastic show
for you on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST!! We are holding this fantabulous
shindig at CD Warehouse at 4001 N. Penn. There will be some cheap
refreshments, and it will be a rocking good time. The new CDs will be
$8 each, and it will be $5 to get into the show. We've decided that
if you think you're going to want to sit and listen, instead of stand
up and rock out, you can bring your own chair (those snazzy camp
chairs that people bring to outdoor gigs and so forth should work
great). Full info is below!

Meanwhile, starting next week (Sunday, October 25th), you'll be able
to listen to the whole EP on doctorpants.com!! At this time, two
tracks are streaming on our MySpace page (www.myspace.com/drpants5),
on our new Facebook music page (they don't really give you a succinct
URL for those...Just go on Facebook and do a search for "Dr. Pants"
and you should find us) and on our Sonicjive.com page
(www.sonicjive.com/drpants). We hope that if you are not already our
MySpace friend or Facebook fan that you will become both! Also, go to
Sonicjive.com, which is our new favorite music networking site, create
your profile and become a Sonicjive fan of Dr. Pants!!

We really hope you'll make the show, and that you'll bring friends.
Forward this on to as many people as possible and let's pack this one
out! See you there!

David, Aaron, Dustin & Kenneth

P.S. For you out of town folks, the EP should be available through
CD Baby by the 11/1 release date, as well as on iTunes and other
digital music services shortly after that. I'll send out another
email when these things are up and running.

Saturday, November 1st, 2008
CD Warehouse - http://www.cdwarehouse.com
Release Party @ CD Warehouse!! - 8:30 pm
4001 N.
Still listening.

So I just listened to Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth from start to finish. The nature of the experience I had listening to it just now is the kind of thing that makes me realize that the way music is engaged in our culture, to a large degree, is completely wrong, or at least wrong-headed.

It's taken me a long time to arrive at the place in my life where I "get" this record. I'm there now, and I can't really explain to you why I "get" it now and I didn't before. The thing that changed for me is so abstract I can't even put it into words. This is what makes me start to doubt things, to doubt that our culture has anything right about how to engage something as abstract as music...At the very least, the entire school of rock criticism starts to seem completely ludicrous. Those guys sit there and make totally subjective judgments about a piece of music, try to explain to you in some quasi-objective manner why they do or don't like it, when all they are really doing is making a sad attempt to justify to the rest of the world the fact that they did or did not connect with a certain piece of music. What a complete waste of time. Now, mind you, as soon as I say this, I realize that many of the so-called rock critic types have many times influenced my decision about whether to buy a certain record or not, but really, for the most part, all that's happening is me observing a certain consensus among writers who have some taste in common with me, which gives me the confidence that I might connect with that record they all like, and so I go for it.

This much I can say...If you have always had trouble with Daydream Nation, the way I did for so long, keep at it. You may eventually come to the place I have come to.

EP Recording, Day Three

Ugh...It's frustrating to get to this point in the day and realize that it's challenging to access all the amazing thoughts and feelings I had earlier. It was a great day...A lot of fun, a lot of good things. We have tracked everything for the EP, save 2 guitar parts we're going to get Kenneth to do a week from Saturday. By the time we get there, most of the mixing will be done, too, so we'll just plug his parts in and that will be it.

I may have said this yesterday, but this record is SO much fun...I can't describe the joy I've gotten from making it. I can't tell you about too much of it without giving away some of the things that will crack you up when you first hear it, but just know that we have managed to capture some of the craziness that makes Dr. Pants so much fun to see live. I laughed so many times today listening back to what we've done, because of the actual humorous nature of it, but also just out of sheer joy. "Bootyfest" sounds amazing, "If I Were John Cusack" sounds amazing..."Kenny Loggins" sounds amazing, and will sound even better once Kenneth gets his part on there. "It All Depends" and "Sweet Natasha" have more of a "serious" feel to them than the other songs, but it would be dishonest to make a completely goofy record. I've said already that I think our next full studio record will be a tad more "serious", so this EP will be your chance to get crazy with the Pants.

Aaron came back today and did his vocal part on "Kenny Loggins", and he also contributed a "bonus" guitar element, that will be revealed to you when the record is done (heh heh). I am proud of that kid. His heart is in this record, which is more than I could have asked for.

Dustin...What to say about Dustin? Dustin worked hard, did and said great things, got great sounds, was easy and fun to work with, I mean...and that's not even to mention his drumming. When it's all said and done, he will have been greatly responsible for this record's existence. I am really thrilled to have had this opportunity to work with him, and I'm excited about him being involved in other Dr. Pants projects in the future. It's hard to say where this band is going, and who's going to be able stay involved and who's not, but I will do everything I can do to keep Dustin involved, in one way or another.

I will write another blog after we do Kenneth's last two parts, so that he gets his due. Right now, there probably wouldn't be a Dr. Pants if it weren't for Kenneth...he cannot be undervalued.

So, until then, I hope you drool with anticipation for this record. I hope these blogs have done nothing but whet your appetite for it. We will see you all soon.

David
